The Airing Cupboard

We are experiencing a glut of vegetables in our own garden as well as the plot down the road which we are helping to cultivate. Husband decided to pull up the "Red Baron" onions because the wet weather will encourage mould. The greenhouse has now become an airing cupboard and the onions are drying out nicely. We have an army of beetroot which are alarmingly developing from tennis ball size to football size - we cannot eat them fast enough so the neighbours are called in to help devour the crop. The same can be said for french and broad beans - we now have half a freezer full. It gives us a lovely feeling when we sail past the veg section in the supermarket - what a price they charge!

Incidentally, this new-build house does not have the luxury of an airing cupboard - perhaps when the onions are shifted I can use the greenhouse?

I love the idea of you airing your laundry in the greenhouse :-)

Well done, what a good idea.
As long as they don't end up in the REAL airing cupboard!

Isnt it lovely to eat your own. We always think we save at least £1 each time we pull up another veg. Most satisfactory.

We have varying results... must be the variable weather up here. I picked some wild strawbs..only a few..they were yummy.

Now those look good - impressive even. Note to self...get on and pull those onions before the rain does its best.

They look fantastic - we have problems with red onions (they always bolt). Any hints on cultivation?

We have another type of onion in the veg plot as well as the "Red Baron". Red Baron seems to have suffered from the recent wet weather whilst the other onions are still doing well. We thought the Red Baron suffered from being grown too close to purple sprouting whose leafs overhung the onion, thus making the soil too damp.

Red onions in shops always seem a little soft. Growing your own you can be certain they're fresh and crisp.

Wished we lived near enough to you to come and "purchase" some of your beetroot. We love it. Perhaps we should have grown our own! A x

I had a "supermarket moment" a few years ago when I saw Sainsburys chargin £1.50 for three sticks of rhubarb. Only Mrs Malc managed to persuade me not to go professional with the allotment.

Those are fabulous onions by the way. Sets or from seed?

Malc - the onions were from sets. We are wondering where to store them now they have dried out. Our garage gets slightly damp (new-build house builders seem to not damp-proof garages) and we have no other sheds or indeed a utility room. We already have a very large box of potatoes on top of a kitchen cupboard. We cannot leave veg on the floor as we have under floor heating!!!
