Husband and I, after shopping in Waitrose, usually have a lemon yum yum and a cup of coffee and read their free newspapers! Yesterday, displayed on the counter were these buns - I think their usual name is finger buns. Well - not in our household! I attended a boarding school in the long distant days of my youth and every Tuesday and Thursday we were given these buns and a up of cocoa at break time. These buns were everyone's favourite at school, as you can imagine, us schoolgirls affectionally called them "greased rats"

And does the fact that you remembered the exact days on which you received these treats hint at what the rest of the week's food was like? As an ex-boarder myself, I can recall very clearly all the highs and lows (mostly the latter) of the school diet, and have a lifelong loathing of Sunday's special breakfast - cornflakes with HOT milk.... groooooh......

Rockwallaby - went to the same school as Princess Anne. Being a tomboy I did not take kindly to a genteel education and I was homesick until the day I left (unfortunately after knee accident playing tennis). I think I would have done better at the local grammar school. But I do not blame my parents who were only doing what they thought best!

Great name for the bun - sad that school wasn't a great time for you. Bording school always held a fascination for me - I read all the "Mallory Towers" books - but so glad I went to our local grammar school. That in itself was traumatic enough for a little country girl in the early sixties!!
That is an 'iced finger'. We had currant buns at break time - they cost 3d I think and were accompanied by those horrid little bottles of tepid milk. Yuk and double yuk!

Mountainear - lemon yum yums are delicious iced buns with lemon curd inside. They are moist and delicious. They seem to be a Waitrose exclusive!!

Iced buns ? But then you went somewhere upmarket . Mine never really had treats in mind .It was run more along the lines of Abstinence and Rewards In Heaven .
Though it did run to apple fritters twice a term .
