The Trouble With Under Floor Heating Is . . . . . . .

We cannot store any of our glut of veg on the kitchen floor!!! Apart from that problem the under floor heating is marvellous!

Our garage, (being new-build) does not have a second skin so it becomes damp with the rain seeping though the walls. Husband and I have spent many a merry hot dry day (in the dim distant past) painting on "Aquaseal" to the outside of the walls. We cannot store our veg in the garage. We have no utility room either! We have no garden shed either!

The freezer is full with french and broad beans. Yesterday we dug half a row of potatoes from the plot down the road and these are now being stored in a box on top of a kitche cupboard. We have six more rows of potatoes to dig!!!!! The neighbours are going to be pleased with regular offerings of beetroot (now the size of a bowl, as in bowling green!!!!), french beans and probably potatoes. Bother - I have just looked out of window and it is raining again - meant to go and pick some more beans before they grow enormous and hard. Sorry - that does not sound very nice!

Ha ha!

That's the trouble with veg...... it all is ready to eat at the same time and all the neighbour's stuff is too. Never there in the winter time when it is so expensive!
I wonder if underfloor heating is expensive to run?

Maggie - under floor heating is cheaper to run, or so it seems to us. We were told by the Developer to leave it running all the year and we have our thermostats set at 18C. I don't think the heating has come on since April. The house is very well insulated - in fact we are actually too hot. At the moment am wearing a t-shirt - we do not need any sweaters in the house and we have windows open despite the rain!

I agree with Maggie May, it's either feast or famine with veggies!! Hope you figure out another way of storing them.......how about drying them, don't know anything about doing it but it may work??

I have underfloor heating too - I love it - though did discover in my first winter it heated up the rubbish nicely in the bin - so bin now kept in utility room! OK - I need to know - first year growing veggies and I have lots of broad beans - do I need to "blanche" them before I freeze them? Or can I freeze them "raw"?? I have discovered friends are VERY grateful for fresh garden produce though!

Sian - We do not bother to blanch any of our veg! The afficionados I'm sure would prefer that we did!

Last autumn I left some windfall apples on our utility room floor. They were eaten by a mouse that let itself in. So under floor heating or not I would not store anything edible on the floor.
